How to write a school essay

The ability to write an essay is an essential basic skill that is required to be successful in school. Much depends on the teacher and the nature of the assignment, but in most cases the essay has approximately the same structure. Support your thesis with literate evidence in the main body of the essay to write a successful essay in any subject!

Plan

Determine the type of essay. Study the specific requirements to determine the type of essay you need. Your essays may be different in nature, but they will always follow a five-paragraph structure. Review the assignment requirements and determine what information needs to be included in the essay.

An explanatory essay always uses arguments to explore and explain a topic.

A compelling essay tries to convince the reader to believe or accept a particular point of view.

A narrative essay is about personal experiences from real life.

A descriptive essay seeks to convey deeper meaning through descriptive words and sensory details.

Main part

Begin each paragraph with a topical sentence. The thematic sentence communicates the main idea of   the paragraph and is directly related to the thesis. All other sentences reinforce the thematic sentence of the paragraph. Make topical sentences for the main paragraphs based on your outline.

Treat topic sentences like mini-theses so that the paragraphs only touch on a specific aspect of the topic.

Provide collected facts and quotes with links to sources. Use your research to summarize or quote directly from sources. This will give the essay credibility. The list of used literature is drawn up in accordance with the teacher's requirements.

Provide your own analysis of the facts. Link quotes to the topic of the essay so that the reader clearly understands what you are trying to say. For example, if in the main paragraphs you look at similar ideas from different perspectives, you can use phrases like “the same,” “the same,” “the same,” to move on to the next paragraphs.

The ending

Briefly repeat the thesis and summarize the reasons. Remind readers of the main idea of   the essay and the reasoning behind it. Don't repeat the thesis word for word. Change the wording and rewrite the thematic sentences in other words. This will help the reader to better remember the arguments from the essay.

Consider the relevance of the topic of your work. Connect your essay idea to the real world. How can a reader use such information in real life? This will show why your essay is outside the scope of the teacher's suggested assignment.

For example, if in an essay you are considering the themes of a work, then think about how they affect the lives of modern people.

End the paragraph with an unforgettable detail that ties the entire text together. At the end of the essay, you can indicate a fact, quote or ask a question. Link it to the introduction to make the essay a full-fledged self-contained text and complete the topic you started.

At the end, use a sentence of the same type as the first phrase that grabbed the reader's attention.

Make a list of used literature if necessary. Check with your teacher for the need or format for the bibliography. Indicate the sources used on a separate page at the end of the essay. Arrange them alphabetically by the last names of the authors and remember to use the correct citation format depending on the style of your essay.

The list of used literature will demonstrate that you were guided not only by your own conjectures, and the reader will be able to later familiarize themselves with the source materials.

Examination

Make sure your arguments are clear and compelling. The essay should contain a clearly expressed thesis and convincing examples. Reread your essay and make sure the text does not look confusing or contradict your ideas.

Ask a friend or parents to read the essay and communicate how clearly your thoughts are presented.

Check for smooth transitions between paragraphs. Review your transitional sentences and make sure that the main paragraphs flow logically. Make sure all your thoughts are clearly connected at the sentence level. Each sentence should have an impact on the subsequent text. This will allow the reader to better follow your thoughts.

So, if the essay deals with the history of the phenomenon, then make sure that the sentences follow the chronological order of events.

Rewrite or delete the off-topic passages. Each phrase in the essay should support the thesis or thematic sentences. If you notice contradictions or facts that do not support your argument, then they should be deleted from the essay or linked to the main idea.

If you need to delete some passages, then make sure that the flow and consistency of your thoughts is not disturbed.
